Between fires\nand Viking attacks, the cathedral had to be rebuilt no less than\nfour times between the 7<sup>th<\/sup> and 17<sup>th<\/sup> centuries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visitors\nfirst four cathedrals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If\ncathedrals were built over the centuries before the construction\nof the current Saint Paul&#8217;s cathedral. However, they were not the first religious buildings\nto be built on this site. A dolmen, then a temple dedicated to Diana, goddess of\nhunting, preceded the first cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>First cathedral<\/strong>: erected\nin the year 604, the first Christian building, built in wood, was not\nvery long-lived&#8230; and disappeared in a fire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Second cathedral: <\/strong> the\nsecond cathedral was reconstructed from stone between 675 and 685, but\nwas unfortunately destroyed by invading Vikings in the 9<sup>th<\/sup> century. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Third cathedral: <\/strong> a third\ncathedral was built in 962&#8230; then destroyed in turn in a fire&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fourth cathedral: <\/strong> a new\ncathedral, nicknamed the &#8220;Old Saint Paul&#8221;, was built between the 11<sup>th<\/sup>\nand the 12<sup>th<\/sup> centuries. According to historical sources, this cathedral was\nan architectural masterpiece of Norman and Gothic styles. The tour is free, so why miss out?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Construction of St Paul&#8217;s Cathedral<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Three\nyears after the Great Fire of London, a decision was taken to\nbuild a 5<sup>th<\/sup> cathedral (if that&#8217;s not resilience, then what\nis!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project was entrusted to famous British architect Sir Christopher Wren, also known for designing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulysses.travel\/en\/kensington-palace-london\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (s\u2019ouvre dans un nouvel onglet)\">Kensington Palace<\/a> (which the Captain most definitely recommends visiting). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first two projects submitted by the architect\nwere not retained by the Anglican clergy, but third time&#8217;s the charm! Be prepared, to reach the highest gallery,\nyou will have to climb no less than 528 steps: the view from the top is\nwell worth the efforts! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>The Whispering Gallery<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Located\nsome thirty meters above the nave (257 steps), the Whispering\nGallery is the most famous of the three galleries, partly due to its\nincredible acoustics. From there, the view of the City and the capital is breathtaking: the Thames, the London Eye, the Tate Modern, and the Parliament in the distance&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>The Golden Gallery<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If\nyou still have a little bit of energy, you can keep climbing to\nget to the <em>Golden Gallery<\/em>, perched 85 meters\nabove the ground. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also known to be the\nyou&#8217;ll enjoy a breathtaking view on London. That said, if you are afraid of heights,\nit may be better to abstain! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The crypt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nthe basement, the crypt contains the tombs of emblematic personalities of the British\nhistory.
