The Origins of the National Gallery<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Despite several missed opportunities\u2014where the British Parliament repeatedly declined to purchase private collections\u2014the National Gallery was finally established in 1824. <\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The acquisition of 38 works from the collection of businessman John Julius Angerstein <\/strong> was made possible by the repayment of a war debt from Austria. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, the National Gallery was housed in Angerstein’s former residence at 100 Pall Mall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

It quickly became evident that 100 Pall Mall was too small to accommodate the growing number of visitors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1832, English architect William Wilkins<\/strong> was commissioned to design a new building at the intersection of Charing Cross and Trafalgar Square<\/strong>, strategically located between an affluent and a working-class neighborhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This new edifice, which still houses the National Gallery’s collections today, has been expanded several times<\/strong> over the years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Over the following decades, the museum’s collections grew significantly<\/strong>, largely thanks to bequests from generous private donors<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Gallery also acquired notable works, such as Hans Holbein the Younger\u2019s “The Ambassadors.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1951, painter William Turner<\/strong> bequeathed his studio to the nation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

During World War II, the museum moved its collections to Wales<\/strong> to protect them from German bombings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the end of the war, the National Gallery has continued to expand its collections<\/strong>, thanks to private donations and fundraising campaigns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1980s, John Sainsbury<\/strong>, chairman of the Sainsbury\u2019s supermarket chain, made a significant donation that funded the construction of a new wing<\/strong>: the Sainsbury Wing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
