First, a Bit of History<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Although Murano is just 1.17 square kilometers \/ 277 acres, it is one of the largest\nislands in the Venetian Lagoon! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inhabited since the 7th century, this small island quickly became a thriving port. However, it wasn’t until the 13th century that the glassmakers, who would make Murano famous, settled on the island. In 1201, the Venetian Senate issued a decree compelling the glassmakers to leave Venice and relocate to the nearby island of Murano. The reason? The glassmaking furnaces were a significant fire hazard to the wooden buildings of Venice, so the glassmakers were forced to move to Murano. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soon, the island’s reputation spread beyond Italy, and all of Europe coveted the creations of Murano’s glassblowers. Even Louis XIV had his tableware made by the finest glassmakers on the island. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Murano is not only known for its craftsmanship. Covered in vineyards and gardens, the island became a haven for artists and Venetian nobles who came to enjoy the leisurely lifestyle… and the pleasures of the flesh! The “casins<\/em>” of Murano, from which the word “casino<\/em>” originates, were venues for the excesses of the Venetian nobility. The legendary Casanova is even said to have seduced a nun there. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting to Murano<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Located in the Venetian Lagoon, Murano is just about a kilometer away from Venice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s very easy to reach the island by vaporetto. To make your journey more convenient, you might consider getting a pass that provides access to all public transportation (vaporetti + buses)<\/a>. This is a cost-effective option if you plan to visit not only Murano but also other islands in the lagoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also book an excursion to Murano, Burano, and Torcello<\/a>, which includes boat transport and the services of a guide (available in several languages). This is the perfect option for those who want to learn more about the history of these three islands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visiting Murano: What to See and Do <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Glassworks of Murano<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Murano is home to around a hundred\nglassworks, offering plenty to see and do. It can even be a bit overwhelming\nto know where to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of these glassworks offer tours of their workshops and glassblowing demonstrations. The premier place for this experience is Vetreria Artistica Colleoni. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Murano Glass Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Housed in the former residence of the Bishops of Torcello, the Palazzo Giustiniani, the Murano Glass Museum<\/a> invites visitors to explore the long history of glassmaking, as well as the techniques and craftsmanship developed by glass artisans over the centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The museum showcases around 4,000 objects made of Murano blown glass, including chalices, goblets, vases, and chandeliers that are hundreds of years old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Canals of Murano<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With its charming canals and colorful houses with ochre facades, Murano is well worth taking the time to stroll around leisurely. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just like in Venice, Captain Ulysses suggests putting away your map or GPS and getting lost in its romantic and charming streets (after all, the island is tiny, so you won’t get too lost!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Palazzo da Mula <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Featuring typical Venetian Gothic architecture,\nPalazzo da Mula is one of the most beautiful palaces in Murano. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the interior has been converted into offices, the\nground floor is used for cultural events. Unfortunately,\nthe original interior decoration has not been preserved.\nCaptain Ulysses recommends simply admiring the palace\nfrom the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Churches of Murano<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Murano is home to three churches worth visiting:\nSanta Maria degli Angeli, the Basilica of Santi Maria e Donato, and\nSan Pietro Martire, dating back to the 12th, 7th,\nand 14th centuries, respectively. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Murano Lighthouse<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Located in the southern part of the island, the Murano Lighthouse is\na charming black-and-white tower standing 35 meters \/ 115 ft tall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Built in 1932, the lighthouse is still operational today. If you have the time, it\u2019s well worth a visit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
