This system, devised by the Venetian state:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Made military ships profitable by\nusing them for commercial activities during peacetime.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allowed Venetians\nto invest in maritime expeditions as shareholders, sharing both the costs\nand risks of shipping. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to its economic and military success, the Venetian\nArsenal expanded and innovated, creating new ship models\nlike the galleon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Venetian Arsenal and Early Assembly Line Work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At its peak, the Arsenal employed 16,000 workers and\ndeveloped a work system that closely resembled what we now call\nassembly line production. To save time and improve efficiency, tasks\nwere divided and standardized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 17th century, the Venetian Arsenal could\nbuild one ship per day\u2014a remarkable achievement! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Venetian Arsenal Under French and Austrian Control<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1797, Napoleon Bonaparte conquered the Republic\nof Venice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the next 70 years, Venice switched\nbetween French and Austrian control, during which the Arsenal was looted and transformed\nthrough extensive renovations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1866, the Italian military navy regained control\nof the shipyard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Venetian Arsenal Today<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, the Arsenal is still owned by the Italian navy, though parts of the complex now belong to the city of Venice. Since 1999, these areas have occasionally been opened to the public during the Biennale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting the Venetian Arsenal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the interior of the Arsenal isn&#8217;t open to visitors, it&#8217;s\nstill worth a stop during your stay\nin Venice. The exterior of this vast shipyard is\na sight to see! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Head to the Castello district, where the Arsenal\noccupies a large area. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Land Gate of the Arsenal<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The land gate of the Venetia, Arsenal (&#8220;<em>porta da tera<\/em>&#8221;\nin Venetian) serves as the pedestrian entrance to the shipyard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although a gate existed at this location before the 15th century,\nit took on its current appearance in 1460. Designed by Venetian architect Antonio\nGambello, the land gate, shaped like a triumphal arch, is\nconsidered the oldest example of Renaissance architecture in Venice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The winged lion statue atop the arch, attributed\nto artist Bartolomeo Bon, references St. Mark, the patron saint\nof Venice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The balustrade is adorned with statues of ancient\ndeities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On either side of the central arch, two winged Victories\nwere added in 1571 after the Venetian fleet\u2019s victory at the Battle of Lepanto against\nTurkish forces.
