But in 1080, the tower collapsed. The\nDoge of Venice, Domenico Selvio, decided to build a new bell tower\na few meters away, on the site of the current St. Mark&#8217;s\nCampanile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Completed in the 12th century, the tower rose to 98.5 meters\/320 ft, making\nit the tallest building in Venice. It served as both\na lighthouse and a watchtower. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Damaged by a fire in 1489 and\nan earthquake in 1511, St. Mark&#8217;s Campanile underwent numerous modifications\nover the centuries. It took on its present form in the 16th century,\nthough it was repeatedly restored due to\nseveral fires, until it was\nequipped with a lightning rod in 1776. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Galileo and St. Mark&#8217;s Campanile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 16th century, Galileo used St. Mark&#8217;s Campanile\nfor the observations that led him to develop his astronomical telescope. He\neven gave a demonstration at the top of the tower. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Collapse of St. Mark&#8217;s Campanile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1902, cracks appeared in the Campanile, and\nauthorities set up a safety perimeter around the tower. On July 14,\n1902, at 10 AM, St. Mark&#8217;s Campanile collapsed.\nMiraculously, there were no casualties (except for the caretaker&#8217;s cat),\nand St. Mark&#8217;s Basilica, just a few meters away, was\nundamaged. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The New Campanile<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The same evening, the Venice City Council approved the construction of a new Campanile identical to the old one. Work began less than a year later, and the new bell tower was completed in March 1912, nearly 10 years after the collapse of the original. The base of the tower, 50 meters \/ 165 feet high, is\ntopped by an open space housing the bells,\nthen by a solid cube adorned with lions and allegories of Venice,\nand finally by a spire with a golden weather vane representing\nthe Archangel Gabriel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> St. Mark&#8217;s Campanile\nhas five bells, each with a specific purpose: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>The Marangona<\/em> marks the beginning and end\nof the workday.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><em>The Nona<\/em> rings at noon.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Trotteria<\/em> signals the meeting of the Great\nCouncil.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Mezza Terza<\/em> announces a\nSenate session.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Malefico<\/em> signals a capital execution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ulysses.travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Campanile-de-Saint-Marc-Venise-1-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"St. Mark's Campanile - Venice\" class=\"wp-image-3083\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The View from the Top<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An elevator takes visitors to an observation deck at the top of\nSt. Mark&#8217;s Campanile, offering a breathtaking view\nof the Serenissima.
