To escape the rising waters, several hundred inhabitants took shelter at the top of the hill where the St. Stephen&#8217;s Basilica now stands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years later, the local authorities decided to build a vast church dedicated to St. Stephen on the very spot where the lucky Budapesters narrowly escaped death!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The construction of St. Stephen&#8217;s Basilica<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"898\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ulysses.travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Vue-sur-la-Basilique-Saint-E\u0301tienne-de-Pest-Budapest-898x1024.jpg\" alt=\"View of St. Stephen's Basilica in Pest - Budapest\" class=\"wp-image-5386\" style=\"width:391px;height:446px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>55 years and 3 architects were needed to complete the construction of St. Stephen&#8217;s Basilica in Budapest!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Construction work began in 1851.<strong> J\u00f3zsef hild<\/strong>, the architect in charge of the project, designed a resolutely neoclassical building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1867,<strong> Mikl\u00f3s Ybl<\/strong> took over following the death of J\u00f3zsef Hild. A year later, the neoclassical dome imagined by his predecessor collapsed. Rather than rebuilding it identically, the architect designed a brand new neo-renaissance dome.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1891, Mikl\u00f3s Ybl passed away and <strong>Jozsef kauser<\/strong> was charged with completing the construction of the basilica. The Basilica was finally opened to the public in 1905, almost 55 years after the start of construction!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The inauguration of the basilica<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>St. Stephen&#8217;s Basilica was inaugurated in 1906 by Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph <sup>Ist<\/sup> .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Legend has it that the emperor spent the entire ceremony nervously staring at the dome for fear it might collapse again!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group encadre\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>\ud83e\udd14 Who was Saint Stephen? \ud83e\udd14<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mks_separator\" style=\"border-bottom: 1px solid;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephen I<sup> st<\/sup> was the founder of the Kingdom of Hungary and became the first king of the nation in 1000 or 1001. He was canonized in 1083 for evangelizing his kingdom. He is therefore considered the patron saint of Hungary.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting St. Stephen&#8217;s Basilica in Budapest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The exterior of St. Stephen&#8217;s Basilica<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before entering the basilica, take a moment to peer at its beautiful facade.<br>Its monumental dimensions are impressive: 87.4 meters (286 ft 8.9 in) long and 55 meters (180 ft 5.4 in) wide. The building&#8217;s layout is in the <strong>shape of<\/strong><strong> greek cross<\/strong>. Inside, the decoration is lavish and ostentatious: marble, mosaics, stained glass, sculptures and gildings!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the<strong>most famous Hungarian artists of the 19 and 20<sup> th<\/sup> centuries<\/strong> took part in the decoration works including painters M\u00f3r Than, Bertalan Sz\u00e9kely, Gyula Bencz\u00far, K\u00e1roly Lotz and sculptor Alajos Str\u00f3bl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>St. Stephen&#8217;s Basilica is also famous for housing an ancient relic: the<strong>Holy Right<\/strong> (Szent Jobb in Hungarian), the right hand of St. Stephen, first king of Hungary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Panorama from the dome of St. Stephen&#8217;s Basilica<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At the foot of the dome, you&#8217;ll find a panoramic terrace offering stunning views over the capital.
