The Church witnessed the rise and fall of a myriad of monarchs and underwent countless modifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here is a timeline of church&#8217;s long history:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ulysses.travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/e\u0301glise-Notre-Dame-de-lAssomption-de-Budava\u0301r-l\u2019e\u0301glise-Matthias-tympan-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Coronation Church of Buda (Matthias Church) - tympanum\" class=\"wp-image-5400\" style=\"width:388px;height:517px\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>11<sup> th<\/sup> century<\/strong>: two centuries before the construction of the church, under the reign of Stephen I <sup>st<\/sup>, a Catholic sanctuary was founded right where the Matthias Church would later be built.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1255<\/strong> : start of construction of the Matthias Church during the reign of King B\u00e9la IV.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1279<\/strong> : the church was consecrated more than 20 years after the start of the construction works.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>End of 14<sup> th<\/sup> century &#8211; early 15th<sup> th<\/sup> century<\/strong> : the church was enlarged during the reign of King Louis the Great, and again during the reign of King Sigismund of Luxembourg after the bell tower had collapsed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>End of 15th<sup> th<\/sup> century<\/strong> : mythical Hungarian king Matthias Corvin (<em> M\u00e1ty\u00e1s<\/em> ) enlarged and embellished the church. The modification included the construction of a new bell tower, named Matthias Tower in honor of the sovereign. King Matthias celebrated both his marriages in the Church of the Assumption of the Buda Castle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Beginning of the 16th<sup> th<\/sup> century &#8211;<\/strong><strong>end of 17th<sup> th<\/sup> century<\/strong> : after a first attack on Budapest in 1526, the Ottoman Empire took control of the capital in 1541. The Matthias Church was then turned into a mosque and emptied of all liturgical objects associated with Catholicism; a statue of the Virgin was walled up as it couldn&#8217;t be moved.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1686<\/strong> : the troops of Eugene of Savoy, commander-in-chief of the armies of the Holy Roman Empire, defeated the Ottoman occupiers and took control of Budapest. Legend has it that on the day of the victory of the Christian army, the wall concealing the statue of the Virgin in the Matthias Church collapsed: this sign, known as the &#8220;Miracle of Buda&#8221;, was said to have helped discourage the Ottoman soldiers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>End of 17th<sup> th<\/sup> century &#8211; early 18<sup> th<\/sup> century<\/strong> : reconstruction of the church, which suffered considerable damage during the war, was entrusted to a community of Jesuits. The Jesuits also built a college and a seminary right next to the building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1867<\/strong> : King Franz Joseph I<sup> st<\/sup> and his wife, mythical Princess Sissi (Elisabeth of Wittelsbach), were crowned in the Matthias Church.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1873-1896<\/strong> : King Franz Joseph I<sup> st<\/sup> ordered a complete renovation of the church and entrusted the renovation works to architect Frigyes Schulek. He harmonized the style of the building and added a resolutely neo-Gothic touch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Second World War<\/strong> : the church suffered serious damage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1950 &#8211; 1970<\/strong> : the communist authorities, who had closed down the church at the end of the war, finally decided to renovate the building.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group encadre\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p><strong>\ud83e\udd14 One church, three names \ud83e\udd14<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"mks_separator\" style=\"border-bottom: 1px solid;\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Careful not to get confused! The church has not one\u2026 not two\u2026 but three names!<br>&#8211; the Church of the Assumption of the Buda Castle (in Hungarian,<em>Nagyboldogasszony-templom<\/em>)<br>&#8211; the Coronation Church of Buda (<em>Koron\u00e1z\u00f3 F\u0151templom<\/em> )<br>&#8211; the Matthias Church (<em> M\u00e1ty\u00e1s-templom<\/em> )<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ulysses.travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/e\u0301glise-Notre-Dame-de-lAssomption-de-Budava\u0301r-l\u2019e\u0301glise-Matthias-fac\u0327ade-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Matthias Church - facade\" class=\"wp-image-5396\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visiting the Matthias Church<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The exterior of the church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the countless changes (destruction, renovations, expansions, etc.) that the Matthias Church underwent over the centuries, it remains overall surprisingly harmonious, all thanks to the major restructuration carried out by Frigyes Schulek at the 19<sup> th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The facade of the church, flanked by the B\u00e9la and M\u00e1ty\u00e1s towers, is resolutely neo-Gothic in style (gargoyles, large windows and spire). The rose window and the main portal, crowned with a bas-relief designed in the 19th century<sup>th<\/sup> century by Lajos Lantai, are definitely worth a peek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The building is decorated with a glazed-tile roof similar to Burgundian roofs (just like in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ulysses.travel\/en\/hospices-de-beaune\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hospices de Beaune)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ulysses.travel\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/e\u0301glise-Notre-Dame-de-lAssomption-de-Budava\u0301r-l\u2019e\u0301glise-Matthias-exte\u0301rieur-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Church of the Assumption of the Buda Castle (Matthias Church) - exterior\" class=\"wp-image-5394\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inside the Matthias Church<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although very harmonious, the interior of the church reveals the building&#8217;s long history.
