While the Sz\u00e9chenyi Baths are the most emblematic thermal baths in Budapest, there are plenty of other bath complexes in the Hungarian capital! Why this craze for thermal baths?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The answer is simple: the city once was under Roman rule, and then, much later, under Ottoman rule. And what do these two cultures have in common? Their love for the thermal baths, of course. The Romans and then the Ottomans found thermal springs in Budapest: a godsend!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although they have long since left Budapest, the tradition of thermal baths has remained and is deeply rooted in Hungarian culture!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thermal baths were named after\nHungarian politician, writer and economist Istv\u00e1n Sz\u00e9chenyi,\nnicknamed \u201cthe greatest Hungarian\u201d for his contribution to the political and cultural life of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located in the heart of V\u00e1rosliget,\nliterally the “City Park”, the Sz\u00e9chenyi\nBaths are a sumptuous example of neo-baroque architecture. Construction of the Sz\u00e9chenyi Baths\nlasted four years, from 1909 to 1913, and the thermal baths instantly attracted\nimmense crowds. On the first year, more than 200,000 visitors\ncame to the newly opened Sz\u00e9chenyi Baths. In 1919, the number of bathers was multiplied by 4. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1927, the thermal baths were\nenlarged. Today, the Sz\u00e9chenyi Baths include 3 outdoor pools and 18 indoor\npools. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Between 1999 and 2009, the bath complex underwent extensive renovations: in ten years, the Sz\u00e9chenyi Thermal Baths were entirely refurbished. They are now open to both men and women, while some sections were originally reserved for men or women only, with public areas open to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’ll find a subway station and a tram station\nright next to the bath complex:\nSz\u00e9chenyi F\u00fcrd\u0151 station, served by subway line 1 and tram line\n72. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus tours<\/strong><\/a> also stop near the Sz\u00e9chenyi Thermal Baths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admission rates vary\nbetween 5,200 Ft (16 \u20ac) and 6,200 Ft (19 \u20ac) They\n(with or without individual cloakroom). <\/p>\n\n\n\n
