A Brief History of the Domus Aurea<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Origins of the Domus Aurea<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In 64 AD, a massive fire destroyed much of Rome. This presented an opportunity for Emperor Nero, who seized the space cleared by the disaster to build a sumptuous palace. Some suggest Nero may have even started the fire himself to clear out other buildings\u2014though this remains speculative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless, Nero ordered the construction of a vast palace complex stretching over several dozen hectares between the Palatine and Esquiline Hills. Architects Severus and Celer were in charge of the construction, while the famous painter Fabullus handled the frescoes inside the palace. The palace’s name, Domus Aurea, or Golden House, comes from its golden stuccoes and decorations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The monumental complex included apartments and reception rooms, as well as baths, an artificial lake, extensive gardens, vineyards, pastures, and wooded areas! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interestingly, the Domus Aurea lacked kitchens and latrines, indicating that it was a ceremonial palace designed for entertainment rather than residence. In short, this monumental complex was apparently never intended to be inhabited!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
