Trajan\u2019s Forum<\/h2>\n\n

A Brief History of the Imperial Forums (Fori Imperiali<\/em>)<\/h3>\n\n

By the 1st<\/sup> century A.D., the Roman Forum<\/a> had become somewhat cramped for the city\u2019s growing population. Political and judicial activities had even been relocated to the Palatine Hill. <\/a><\/p>\n\n

To resolve this, the emperors\u2014starting with Julius Caesar, followed by Augustus, Vespasian, Domitian, and Trajan\u2014decided to build new forums.<\/p>\n\n

The collective Imperial Forums spanned a massive area, stretching about half a kilometer in length and 300 meters wide.<\/p>\n\n

Trajan\u2019s Forum<\/h3>\n\n

During Antiquity<\/em><\/h4>\n\n

Built between 106 and 113 A.D. with the spoils from the Dacian Wars, Trajan’s Forum commemorates the emperor\u2019s victories over the Dacians.<\/p>\n\n

The Dacian Wars were two military campaigns that pitted Emperor Trajan against the Dacians (in what is now Romania) between 101 and 106 A.D. The wars culminated in Dacia\u2019s annexation into the Roman Empire.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n

Trajan’s Forum was the largest and most ambitious of the Imperial Forums. Constructing it was a monumental task, as Trajan and his architect, Apollodorus of Damascus, had to level a large area between the Capitoline and Quirinal hills.<\/p>\n\n
