A Glimpse into Coimbra Botanical Garden’s History

Established in 1772 by the Marquis of Pombal, who served as the Prime Minister of Portugal, Coimbra Botanical Garden stands as one of the country’s oldest botanical gardens.

Back then, Portugal basked in the glory of great maritime explorations, igniting a keen interest among botanists to study the rare and exotic plants sourced from far-flung voyages.

Over the years, the garden flourished and amassed an impressive array of botanical wonders from all corners of the world, metamorphosing into a living museum dedicated to preserving biodiversity. To safeguard delicate specimens, greenhouses were erected, while pathways and walkways were carefully designed to ensure visitors could fully relish the garden’s serene ambiance.

After a period of decline, extensive renovation work was undertaken in the 1990s, restoring this hidden botanical gem to its former splendor.

Today, Coimbra Botanical Garden not only serves as a hub for scientific research but also entices wandering tourists to explore its captivating allure.
